Assignment 3

Assignment 3: Literature Analysis Essay
For this assignment, there are several steps.  Think of it as 3 assignments, ending in an essay that puts it all together.

Step 1: Read the 3 Required Readings

Read the following texts, and type your answers to the response questions.  Then email your responses to me (stolley@cuhsd.org).

Text #1: Click HERE to read the article "How to Tame a Wild Tongue" – by Gloria Anzaldua
Response Questions:  1. What policy did Anzaldua's grade school have about speaking Spanish while on the premises?  Did it change at PanAmerican University?  2. Explain what Anzaldua means in paragraph 10 when she says "Language is a male discourse."  3. Why are students sometimes encouraged to take French in high school and college, and not Spanish?  4. How does the author relate language to self-identity?  5. In this article, who/what is acting with indifference?

Text #2: Click HERE to read the poem "For my People" by Margaret Walker
Response Questions: 1. Who do you think Margaret Walker is referring to when she repeatedly says "my  people"?  2. How does she seem to feel about "her people"?  3. In the 7th stanza, when she says "the unseen creatures who tower over us omnisciently and laugh" who/what do you think she is referring to? 4. What is the message of her last stanza?  5. In this poem, who/what is acting with indifference?

Text #3: Click HERE to read the excerpt from the true story Night, by Elie Wiesel
Response Questions: (Questions are at the end of the text. Answer 1-5 only, not #6).

Part 2: Write your Rough Draft
After reading the required texts, respond to the following prompt in the form of an analytical essay:
“The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference.  The opposite of art is not ugliness, it’s indifference.  The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference.  And the opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference.”    ~ Elie Wiesel
Prompt:
Indifference is defined as a lack of interest, concern, or sympathy.
Based on the above quote by Elie Wiesel, and your readings from "How to Tame a Wild Tongue", "For My People", and Night, how can one individual’s indifference have an effect on an entire society?
Cite examples of characters/groups demonstrating indifference and the result of their apathy within your paper.  Choose two of the selected readings as your focus and integrate quotations from the readings into the paragraphs of body to support your thesis.
(If you are stuck, Use the  ESSAY OUTLINE tab on the main page of this blog to guide you.)
